Sita and Urmila-Unheard Conversations

About the production

Sita and Urmila: Unheard Conversations draws from the timeless epic Ramayana but shifts the lens to focus on two women whose voices are rarely centred—Sita and Urmila, sisters and daughters of Mithila. This original work blends inspiration from regional and folk versions of Ramayana and contemporary interpretations, offering a reimagined perspective that is both intimate and thought-provoking. Sita and Urmila, sisters and daughters of Mithila. While one lives in the deep solitude of a forest exile, the other lies in a near-eternal sleep within the palace walls. Yet, in this imagined world, sleep is not silence. Through the dreamscape, Urmila transcends the physical realm and connects with Sita across distance and consciousness. Their unheard conversations—one dreaming, one speaking into the night—become a sanctuary of shared grief, defiance, love, and longing. Their voices are not loud, but they are powerful. This play gives space to their thoughts, their struggles, and their strength—offering a new way to see an old story. It reminds us that mythology isn’t just about gods and heroes—it can also be about the questions we’re still asking today about identity, fairness, and the role of women in society. Sita and Urmila: Unheard Conversations is more than a retelling. It is an act of remembering, reclaiming, and re-voicing
