About

Our Vision

To share the rich stories of South Asian culture — with a special focus on Indian heritage with wider Australian audiences, fostering appreciation, understanding, and celebration of diverse traditions through the power of theatre

Our Mission

We aim to create an inclusive and collaborative space that nurtures talent, develops skills, and empowers theatre artists. By engaging with artists across cultures and backgrounds, we strive to produce meaningful performances that reflect both the Indian experience and the multicultural fabric of Australia.

Our Story

The Great Indian Theatre Company (TGITC) is a Perth-based independent theatre collective dedicated to bringing powerful, multicultural stories to Australian stages. Founded in 2022, TGITC collaborates with artists from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to explore themes rooted in identity, heritage, and community connection.

Our Founder and Artistic Director: Sreekanth Gopalakrishnan

As Artistic Director, Sreekanth Gopalakrishnan leads the creative vision for The Great Indian Theatre Company (TGITC).

Raised in Kerala, India—a region rich in classical and folk performance traditions—Sreekanth began his theatre journey in school and college festivals, political street performances, and local productions. After migrating to Perth in 2014, he returned to the stage through community theatre, gradually finding his voice as a playwright, director, and actor.

As an artist of South Asian descent, Sreekanth recognised early on that casting and storytelling opportunities were limited—many mainstream productions in Western Australia remain traditionally Western-focused in both content and casting, often not reflecting the vibrant multicultural makeup of our society. While change is slowly happening, he believes the first step is to bring diverse stories to the stage.

TGITC was born out of this conviction—to give voice to multicultural narratives, particularly those rooted in South Asian heritage. Sreekanth is passionate about showcasing the richness of Indian theatrical traditions, music, costumes, and dramaturgy to broader audiences. His vision is to bridge cultural gaps and foster appreciation, understanding, and dialogue through storytelling.

Sreekanth continues to champion lesser-known narratives and cultural perspectives, ensuring that TGITC’s work remains historically grounded, socially relevant, and artistically bold.

Membership at the Great Indian theatre company

At the Great Indian Theatre Company, we view membership as a reflection of a shared creative journey and collective commitment — not a status to be applied for, but a connection built through collaboration.

Membership naturally evolves through active involvement in a production, whether as part of the cast or behind the scenes with the creative and technical teams. It is our way of honoring those who contribute their time, talent, and spirit to bringing stories to life.

There are no annual membership fees. Instead, individuals become honorary lifetime members once they have been part of a production — a gesture that represents not just appreciation, but a desire to stay connected and grow together as a community.

The lifetime membership model reflects our belief that theatre is not just a one-time project, but an ongoing relationship. It allows members to remain part of the evolving story of the company, regardless of how often they participate in future productions.

Membership remains active unless a person chooses to step away or is unable to uphold the values and code of conduct that guide our work.

At its heart, our company is a community — built on trust, creativity, and the shared love of theatre.
